In my current body of work, I am attempting express my story of perseverance through adversities, by exploring different techniques using contrasts of smooth and rough textures with muted or subdued palettes. I work in layers of dark to light to suggest leaving the darkness behind and showing how it can be overcome. For me, the process of making art is not about the planning out a composition or particular subject or idea, but gesturally expressing myself through brush strokes and mark making. Whether working in clay, paint or other mixed medias, the action of making art has a healing quality for me and it gives me an opportunity to reflect and to just be in the moment. Some of my references do come from nature, but they are mostly from my imagination or subconscious. My work has been described as abstract expressionism, which I really appreciate because this is the movement that I have been mostly influenced by, and it’s more about the creative and spontaneous act of painting than it is about recreating a particular subject.
